Abstract

This paper gives an overview of the historical technology and material characterization of the white grounds applied over time (between 1500 and 1900) to the main altarpiece of the Coimbra Old Cathedral, Portugal. This research was carried out namely by means of Optical Microscopy, Scanning Electron Microscopy with Energy Dispersive X-ray analyses, and X-ray Diffraction.
