Abstract
The concept of socio-ecological system integrates the intimate relationship between humans and nature, viewing both as integral parts of a larger system. This relationship supports the idea of complexity in relation to human phenomena, as they are the result of a variety of factors, the understanding of which requires multidisciplinary approaches. Miguel Torga’s Contos da Montanha recounts episodes from the generic life of rural communities located in the Trás-os- -Montes region, where the influence of the environment on these communities and vice-versa is amplified. The analysis we propose here, performed through the lens of human ecology, is based on the author’s position on issues such as religion or the relationship between humans and nature. In a way, we could say that there is a lot of human ecology in the author’s work, where a holistic perspective over the functioning of communities stands out. While respecting the identity of each individual character, Torga draws on the collective to remind us of the influence of the environment on the nature of communities, thus highlighting their common traits, goals and strengths.
