Abstract
This article analyses the urban development and requalification challenges posed to the city by the first globalization experience throughout the second half of the nineteenth century. Only in this way the benefits coming from the greater internationalization of the national economies could be transmitted to the cities. Lisbon also experienced this process of emulation in the urban layout and the transformation of urban infrastructure.
