Abstract
In this paper, we present two relevant aspects to understand the evolution of archaeology in the territory of Castelo de Vide and why this area of the northern Alentejo region has become a reference in Portugal for the study of early medieval rural settlements. On the one hand, we offer a historiographical
synthesis of the main milestones from the end of the 60s to the beginning of the 21st century in the analysis of this territory during the Early Middle Ages, this was the period in which the first inventories are systematized making clear the abundance and variety of features (rock-cut graves, cist burial necropolis, rural settlement layout, productive areas, etc.), all of them susceptible of being studied.
On the other hand, one of these sites is chosen —the small burial necropolis of Vale da Bexiga and the probable adjacent worship building, one of the first excavations carried out by the Grupo de Arqueologia de Castelo de Vide (1982)— to review the documentation and the recovered materials —particularly the
architectural decorative elements— and offer a new consideration on the transition of economic and religious cult spaces during Late Antiquity
