Abstract
The royal couple responsible for the beginning of a new dynasty in Portuguese monarchy – João I and Philippa of Lancaster – are also the protagonists of a significant change on funerary patterns, breaking with some of the most consistent traditions followed throughout the
fourteenth century in Portugal. Firstly, the funerary chapel designed to house their monument was the first structure in Portuguese royal history to be conceived from the scratch – the Capela do Fundador (‘the Founder’s Chapel’). This innovation should however be nuanced by considering previous commemorative projects. To this end we should start a new discussion on several concepts and values involved in royal commemoration, beginning with the very own notion of pantheon.
