Abstract
The hypothesis that the "Parmenides" is a parody seems to be correct, but with some qualification. This paper proposes to examine the plausibility of the parody hypothesis on the basis of the notion of “ridiculous” (γελοῖον), as expressed in the "Parmenides". We try to show that the parody hypothesis remains valid – without thereby reducing the entire dialogue to a mere dialectical exercise from which no “positive” result can be “extracted” regarding the condition of human beings and the peculiar form of tension that characterizes the philosophical life.
