Abstract
Abstract: In the last few decades important transformations have been emerging in the society and inthe economy, leading to the development of a new economic and social structure. The newconcept of knowledge-based economy comes from the acknowledgement of the importanceof knowledge for economic growth. Actually, in the 90’s social scientists have shown ageneralized concern about the study on how multinationals create knowledge and, particularly, about how they operate its transference. Knowledge is recognized as a crucialsource of economic rent and the effective management of organizational knowledge hasincreasingly been linked to competitive advantage and considered critical to the success ofthe business firm. The paper core question aims to identify the knowledge transfer processes developed amongthe worldwide R&D units and the competencies that are locally developed to earn power byknowledge within these global value chains. The empirical component of this paper isgrounded on an extended case (that involves a local R&D unit, a foreign R&D unit and theheadquarters of the global chain) developed on a multinational from the electronics industry. To support the discussion of data obtained in the empirical study, social networks analyzewill be used.
