Abstract

Tracheal stenosis leads to breath and eating difficulties. Stents are a common procedure in patients with stenosis. Silicone stents have some performance limitations related with stent migration, development of granulation tissue and accumulation of secretions. Since tracheal tree is different from patient to patient is essential to develop a customized and automatic tracheal mesh generator. Hexahedral elements are defined since they have some advantages over tetrahedral meshes. In order to create a full hexahedral mesh, the receding front method was applied and tested for several trachea geometries. Mesh quality was measured using the condition number of the Jacobian matrix. Customized and automatic mesh generation is the first step in order to develop a complex fluid–structure analysis of stent-trachea interface.
