Abstract
This paper examines the role that systemic theories came to play in the research of Xoán González-Millán. First, we reconstruct the overarching theoretical framework present in the 1900s with regard to the study of literatures marked by marginalization and dependency, focusing on the founding of a model of institutional analysis geared for application to the Galician context. The second half of the paper focuses on Gonzalez- Millán's criticism of systemic-based proposals. This criticism, begun in the late 1990s, is based on an epistemological openness to other theoretical frameworks, such as theories dealing with the public sphere or subalternity.
