The social turn of Portuguese colonial geography

Research output: Contribution to journalArticlepeer-review

Abstract

This text suggests a focus on the epistemic and institutional framework of the occurrence of human geography in the former Portuguese colonies, in particular of the Geography Mission of Guinea, directed by Orlando Ribeiro and considered the inaugural moment of this lineage, as a starting point to try to aggregate the split accounts about the affirmation of this knowledge, on the one hand, and about its emergence context, on the other; to integrate the parallel narratives dealing with metropolitan geography and colonial geography; and to converge the history of geography in general with the history of colonial research, as a whole, and the history of social sciences in Portugal.
