Research output: Contribution to journalArticlepeer-review

Abstract

This article takes an overview of the five novels published to date by Valter Hugo Mãe, whose work has been distinguished with a number of prizes, most recently the Grande Prémio Portugal Telecom (2012). It identifies the themes and motifs that are specific to this author's novels, namely love and hate, life and death, Portugal, youth and old age, desire and sexuality, freedom, power and oppression, rebellion, debate and satire. At the same time it traces the narrative and stylistic elements, and the shadings of the fantastic, the grotesque, the supernatural, the existential, the surreal, and the expressionist that Valter Hugo Mãe has explored from his very first novel.
