The Medieval Canon and the Cantigas

Abstract

This paper, “The Medieval Canon and the Cantigas”, presents and discusses the historical reception of the Cantigas de Santa Maria by Alfonso the Learned, King of Castile and León (+1284). The first part shows how this monumental song collection failed to fit the framework that underlies the canon of exemplary works from the Middle Ages defined by modern musicology. The second part tries to explain how in the late Middle Ages it had already failed to be accepted as canonical within the framework of aristocratic or clerical genera.
