Abstract
Rebellions in the Portuguese colonies, and Portuguese Timor in particular, were a periodical occurrence in the nineteenth century. The Rebellion of Manufahi of 1911-1912, which was led by Dom Boaventura da Costa Sottomayor, the ruler of the native kingdom of Manufahi, is considered to be the last great rebellion against the Portuguese presence in Timor. In the case of Portuguese Timor little attention has been given to the press as a source of data about these rebellions, namely from non-Portuguese newspapers. This article addresses this issue and analyses how the flourishing and dynamic Australian press portrayed the event that evolved very near its boarders.
