Abstract

Women, in general, and black women, in particular, are victims of access discrimination and treatment discrimination in organizations. While access discrimination prevents members of a subgroup of the population from entering a job or organization, treatment discrimination occurs when the members of a subgroup receive fewer rewards, resources, or opportunities on the job than they legitimately deserve on the basis of job-related criteria.
The impact of this double discrimination on careers (reduced prospects for promotion, less access to positions of authority and responsibility, fewer opportunities to cultivate relationships with peers and hierarchical superiors) has been investigated in many countries, including in Portugal. The institutional racism i.e. the role of the organizational structure in access discrimination and in treatment discrimination has also been the subject of research. However, in Portugal, it is hardly recognized, studied, or challenged.
Facing that insufficient acknowledgement and research, in our communication we will: a) analyze, from an ethical and political perspective, the impact of institutional racism on the careers of black and afro-descendent women; b) provide some rules to foster the decreasing of the institutional racism.
