Abstract

Epoxy resins are widely used in glass and ceramics conservation. Some studies have been done in order to explore the natural and accelerated ageing of these resins. The most used analytical techniques to characterize the epoxy resins and their ageing have been Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), UV-Vis spectroscopy and tensile strength tests. Studies of systems where the resins were colored for different conservation purposes are rare. Epoxy are one of the most used resins in glass and ceramic conservation and the Orasol dyes are formulated to color them and are used for color matching. The aim of this work is to study the ageing effects of the Orasol dyes on the Hxtal NYL-1 and Araldite 2020 epoxy resins. Another purpose of this work is to compare the chemical structure of Hxtal NYL-1 with Araldite 2020, since from all the resins, Hxtal NYL-1 has been the most studied one.
