Abstract
The discussion concerning nuclear weapons is still relevant, especially when the demand for nuclear materials remains. It reinforces the relevance of the international peace and security, and the nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation legal regimes. After 50 years, the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) continues to be the pillar of international peace. The review of the NPT should have taken place in New York at the United Nations headquarters in May of 2020. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the States that are Parties to the NPT agreed to postpone the tenth NPT Review Conference to a later date. Given the historical circumstance of the 50th anniversary of the NPT, the coincidence of the revision of this same Treaty and the latest developments on nuclear armament in some countries, we intend in this study to analyze the NPT, as well as its historical background, its context and future perspectives, answering this increase of nuclear risk.
