Tertir container terminals efficiency using data envelopment analysis

Abstract

The maritime transport sector has been acquiring a considerable importance in the world economy since the XV century. Port competition has achieved levels that require a more efficient port structure. In this context, this paper aims assessing the efficiency of TERTIR container terminals, a private Portuguese port operator, to support its business decision making. This study applies Data Envelopment Analysis to provide an efficiency measurement for TERTIR container terminals based on a sample consisting of 30 European container terminals. From the results of the analysis, TERTIR container terminals reveal low efficiency levels when compared to other European terminals.
