Abstract
This article analyses the perceptions of Portuguese women with public visibility of the role of digital technologies in online violence and hatred during the COVID-19 pandemic. Through twenty-one in-depth interviews, we sought to understand the role of digital in violence and hatred against women, the individual consequences of these practices and their impact on the broader social context. The study reveals that technologies have fostered practices of intimidation and humiliation aimed at silencing and limiting the participation of
female public figures in the public sphere. The research reports on the harmful effects of online hate and violence on the personal and professional lives of the interviewees, as well as on democracy, by generating a digital spiral of silence, which reproduces and reinforces systemic gender hierarchies.
