Space Environment Information System to support Satellite Operations

Abstract

Space Systems are subject to hard space environment conditions that influence their performance and reliability as well as their lifetime. The main driver for space environment is the Sun. Solar activity influences the entire solar system in several ways, including the presence of streams of fast moving energetic particles and bursts of X-rays during solar flares. Technical systems in orbit, such as satellites or the International Space Station, contain sensitive components that are susceptible to these particles and radiation flux and can be damaged by them. Furthermore, space weather events can be lethal to astronauts during extra-vehicular activities. Today, it is essential to have tools to monitor space weather activity and the means to analyze space weather data, to generate alarms and to forecast future events. Space weather information systems should support spacecraft operators, to take into account this environment, to correlate data from space environment monitors with anomalies observed in the spacecraft and gain experience from missions to improve spacecraft design in future missions. The SEISOP project is based on two precursor projects: SEIS - Space Environment Information system and SESS - Space Environment Support System. The main goal, is to provide satellites operators, project teams, development engineers and scientist a multi-mission environment, modular and expandable, capable to supply, in a structured manner, information and extracted knowledge related to the space environment and its effects on the spacecraft, in order to contribute to the satellite maintenance, to fulfill the mission requirements, and finally to contribute to improve the availability and reliability the space system and future similar systems. This paper presents the system, focusing on the application of the new technologies to support the users in their critical decision making process and its expected impact in optimizing satellites operations strategy.
