Abstract
Introduction: The increase in average life expectancy, associated with the decrease in birth rates, led to an aging population with an overburden of health services. A large proportion of health care is provided by informal caregivers and this study aims to assess the degree of psychological distress associated with caring .Material and methods: An observational, cross-sectional study was carried out with 131 informal caregivers (101 full-time and 30 part-time caregivers). Sociodemographic data were collected, and scales were applied to assess psychological distress and caregiver burden. Results: There was a higher proportion of informal female caregivers, with low levels of schooling. The consumption of psychotropic drugs was higher in individuals with psychological distress. The biggest proportion of individuals in the group with psychological distress were part-time caregivers. Conclusion: The two groups in this study did not show significant differences regarding sociodemographic variables. However, this study has shown that informal part-time caregivers are more likely to experience psychological distress, as are those with higher scores on the Zarit scale. This study and the questions created by it can serve as a basis for further investigations about informal care, as well as the direct and indirect costs associated with them.
