Abstract
The Alta Extremadura was an area of marginal islamic occupation and no important uran centres grew within the andalusi period. Christian troops took over the zone between 1142 and 1229. It meant the starting point for an urban evolution process which strenghtens by the 16th century. Despite these common beginnings, by the end of 15th century a great divergence can be detected in urban patterns. It shows differences among nearby villages. This phenomenon is related to the jurisdictional models which developed in each territory. This way, the vilages in the states of the military orders were characterizes by social equality which is the origin of regular urban patterns. On the other hand, villages in the states of the Crown developed a monumental architecture related to local oligarchy, who was responsible for changes in the urban map. So that, the objective of this contribution is to analyze the bases of this divergence and to synthetize the urban evolution process in the Late Middle Ages, focusing on the case study of Caceres and Valencia de Alcantara.
