Abstract
Digitization has become an imperative of health policies all over the world. Urging the construction and feasibility of innovative infrastructures to store and exchange large amounts of biometric and clinical data and the reconfiguration of health care delivery models, through the transformation of therapeutic interactions, the discourse of health digitization feeds particular sociotechnical imaginaries and promotes the emergence of a new global civic epistemology on how to live healthily. At the same time, it raises important ethical issues, namely those related to data security and the right to privacy and equal access to healthcare.
In Portugal, the public debt crisis of 2011-2014 and the financial bailout that followed served as a trigger for investment in the implementation of digital health as an opportunity to reform the public health system. The local translation of the global neoliberal discourse on the digitalization of health took the form of what Aihwa Ong calls the neoliberal exception.
Based on the preliminary results of the analysis of interviews carried out with key figures involved in the process of implementing digital health in Portugal, it is proposed in this communication to disclose the key elements highlighted by the informants to imagine the future in which the digitalization of health care it will transform traditional forms of treatment and medical care, help-seeking behaviors and health management models.
