Risk management on R&D projects using a risk diagnosing methodology web-based tool

Abstract

Nowadays, the growing competitiveness between companies justifies their increasing interest in managing risk on their projects, in order to achieve potential higher success rates which will be, reflected in enlarged organizational, economic and market results. However, companies don't always check their organizational risk management processes practices even when current international standard support their development, as it happens with international standards like ISO and professional references guides from Professional Associations on project management like PMI and IPMA. In addition, the scientific community, in recent years, sought to develop tools and models to support organization efforts in assessment and management risk that can help identify potential project management process risks in companies' projects portfolio. In this article, using a developed online risk assessment platform, several innovative and non-innovative R&D Projects from an Portuguese highway operator Intelligent Transport Systems Research and Development Unit will be assessed, identifying potential project management risks overall project life cycle i.e. from project idealization to commercialization, putting into perspective the potential impact that could have had the use of the explored web-based tool, if previously used in completed projects and in currently ongoing projects, comparing the platform results and content analysis of the assessed Projects Lessons Learned.
