Abstract
The main objective of this work is to probe the knowledge about the cultural heritage of the lagoon of Aveiro, by study a shipwreck site, named Ria de Aveiro F. The context under study consists mainly of wooden structural elements and planking from a smooth planking vessel and and also elements of a clinker hull belonging to other vessel or maybe incorporating a mixed hull. There is also an interesting collection of blocks and rigging, some pottery fragments, ballast stones and a limestone projectil as well, all framed from the 16th century.
These findings have demonstrated that the lagoon of Aveiro has good archaeological preservation conditions, attesting the importance of navigation and its commercial and cultural contacts during late middle age and early modern period. This thesis integrates and was developed in a research project "Maritime Archaeology of the Ria de Aveiro" from the CHAM, Faculdade de Ciências Sociais e Humanas, Universidade Nova de Lisboa e Universidade dos Açores.
