Abstract

Nursery rhymes are the ‘happy heritage of our oral tradition’ (Opie & Opie, 1955). Nursery rhymes are traditional poems or songs written for children and sometimes they are referred to as Mother Goose Rhymes. They come surrounded in culture and their comforting, rhyming and rhythmic structure help children remember words and phrases. Nursery rhymes take many forms – some spoken, others sung – and they are almost always associated with actions that also contribute to developing children’s fine and gross motor skills.
