Abstract
In the first two weeks of January 2017 an archaeological excavation took place at the site of the former Quelba/Kalba (Sharjah, UAE) fortification where the Portuguese settled in 1624 leaving some drawings and written documents. Nowadays the fortification walls are completely gone since the settlement was intentionally destroyed and covered with sand. The excavation revealed the east wall remains of this fortification with a well inside, plaster floors, post-holes and one small tank outside. Artefacts dated from the late 16th to the 18th century were abundantly found, including a Persian coin. Pottery is the most abundant type of finds with Persian productions, locally made vessels and several Chinese porcelain fragments, including one with an Arab inscription. As expected, zooarchaeological and carbonized vegetal remains also manifest the daily life at this site.
