Levopimaric acid isomerization both thermal (155 °C) and HCL catalysed was studied. In the long term, abietic acid is the major product. Fitting of the data to various models was made. A model involving a common carbocation performs well, but some of the constants can only be evaluated in relative terms. Relations between the kinetic constants of the models were derived. A generalization of the steady-state approximation is made. Inhibited thermal isomerization requires a slightly more elaborate model.
