Abstract

The develoment of an integrated strategy for the use of the residual forest biomass as a renewable energy source will increase the energetic valorization of biomass waste while promoting a regular forest management. In this work, we studied the characteristics and combustion behavior of pellets produced with residual forestry biomass and their mixtures with pine wood. The biomass was collected in the Algarve region which has various forest ecosystems with great ecological and socio-economical importance. Previous studies have shown that the use of some biomass mixtures may have undesirable effects, such as an increase in CO and NOx emissions due to incomplete combustion.
