Representações femininas na faiança portuguesa de Santa Clara-a-Velha: desigualdade, subalternização, emancipação

Entre os séculos XVI e XVII as mulheres vão ser representadas na faiança portuguesa. Nessas representações podemos conjeturar a sua existência enquanto agentes sociais, vítimas de subalternização, apagamento social e desigualdade. As alusões mitológicas e religiosas apresentam a dualidade da sua natureza maléfica e do ideal virtuoso que elas deveriam procurar atingir. As figurações “reais” mostram que eram valorizadas enquanto esposas, mães e “objeto” belo. Este artigo debate as representações femininas na faiança portuguesa recuperada nas escavações arqueológicas do Mosteiro de Santa Clara-a-Velha com dois principais objetivos: compreender como é que estas mulheres eram vistas por aqueles que as representavam e tentar perceber o papel destes objetos na vida das religiosas, enquanto forma de subalternização e/ou emancipação, e de ligação ao mundo exterior e às suas identidades passadas.

During the 16th and 17th centuries, women were subalterns and socially erased. These social agents are going to be represented in Portuguese Faience as mythological characters, embodying the dualism between their malefic nature and the ideal of virtue, and as real characters reminding them of their social role, valued as wives, mothers, and as “objects” of beauty. This paper aims to debate female representations in the Portuguese faience found in the Santa Clara-a-Velha Monastery with two main purposes: to comprehend how these women
were seen by the ones who depicted them and try to understand the role these objects played in the lives of the women who lived inside the monastery as forms of subalternization and/or emancipation but also as a connection to the outside world.
