Abstract
Tourism planning is an essential activity for ensuring the quality, sustainability and competitiveness of tourist destinations. However, there is a lack of preparedness in terms of the management and planning functions, which we believe is related to education professionals receive. Based on a preliminary, exploratory and theoretical research, this article attempts to relate education for professional management and tourism planning to the actual work practice. It is a theoretical essay on the subject, and precedes an empirical study that is being developed in a PhD by one of the authors. It is expected that the results will contribute to better tourism education and, consequently, a more efficient tourism planning.
