Abstract
The study area is located in the Eastern edge of “Lower Tagus Basin”, in the Central Southern Portugal (Alto Alentejo). In this region, the main variscan tectonic structures have WNWESE, NE-SW and NNW- SSE orientations, similar to the fault directions affecting the Cenozoic deposits, that, in general, are responsible for the outcropping of small areas of Paleozoic (Ossa- Morena Zone) rocks in the middle of Cenozoic sediments, suggesting their reactivation. The faults, in the borders between the basement and the Cenozoic sediments apparently controlled the rising of the Paleozoic rocks during the Cenozoic.
