Abstract
Some epitsles have the peculiarity of including tropes (poetic and melodic interpolations) taken from other chants, and called "centos". In the manuscripts, no rubrics show the origin of these re-uses, which makes them difficult to recognize. The troped epitsles with centos seem to first have been composed in France. Most of them were sung for the clerical feasts after Christmas. Their analyse show some features, mostly concerning the adaptation of the music, and, to a lesser degree, of the literary text of the sentences of the epistle between which the cento was included.
