Profiles of volatile hydrocarbon compounds, markers of degradation/ageing of cellulosic material and disease markers

Research output: PatentInternational PCT application

Abstract

The present invention relates to profiles (significant sets of features) of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), namely hydrocarbon compounds with 2-24 carbon atoms (C2-C24), using solid phase micro-extraction (SPME) and high-resolution Gas Chromatography associated with Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) as profile identification methods. The present invention identifies and characterises profiles of cellulosic material marking the degradation and/or ageing of items of cultural heritage, or identifies and characterises profiles of biological fluids marking the presence of a disease. The present invention identifies and characterises the chemical hydrocarbon components of the profiles marking the chemical degradation of cellulosic polymers or lipid peroxidation due to a disease.
