Abstract

The edited book shall provide a geographically and historically diverse overview of philosophical approaches that establish a deep connection between truth and practice, or even see truth itself as a kind of practice. The volume brings into focus important intersections between truth and practice across different philosophical subdisciplines and traditions. Under the label "practices of truth" here are subsumed disparate approaches that can be fruitfully brought together, raising a range of questions that fall outside the domain of a pure theory of truth. These approaches, for example, can help us to make better sense of thinkers who are famously regarded as critics of truth, such as the Pyrrhonian skeptics, Friedrich Nietzsche and Michel Foucault. Moreover, they are helpful to appreciate non-Western philosophies' contributions to developing a unique blend of theory and practice with respect to truth. The chapters in this volume address the impact of truth on practice, truth as actually embedded in practice, and practice as an enabler of philosophical (and religious) insight into truth. They provide an insightful understanding and appreciation of some of the most intriguing “practices of truth” in philosophy and in the history of philosophy, inviting the reader to reflect on key aspects of the interplay between truth and practice. Practices of Truth in Philosophy: Historical and Comparative Perspectives will appeal to scholars and advanced students interested in the history of philosophy, comparative philosophy, epistemology, and the metaphysics of truth.
