Abstract
Prehistory owes its existence to three “inspirations”: the historical, in the sense of prolonging back in time the narrative of human life before the existence of writing and the State; the anthropological, which allowed, through the observation of non-European cultures, to understand some affinities between them and what was imagined to have been our prehistoric past; and the biological, through the contribution that physical paleoanthropology and genetics gave to the understanding of humanities that are now extinct. There are many problems to be solved and many perspectives on the relationship between these disciplines. Restricting myself to so-called “cultural” anthropology, I try here to point out interpretative suggestions that may be useful for the construction of a more credible and interesting prehistory today.
