Abstract

Nowadays, Nepheline Syenite of Monchique (Portugal) have, as main application, the natural stone sector. The present work intends to study the potential of this rock to the ceramic industry, due to its high alumina and alkalis content in the nepheline syenite constitution.

Today, isolated feldspars are the minerals used in this sector, although alumina and alkalis content within nepheline syenite, make of this rock a potential substitute of those feldspars. Alumina is used as a stabilizer, promoting the durability of the materials by increasing the resistance and alkalis content works as fluxing agent, reducing burning temperature.

For this purpose, specimens of 0, 20, 40 e 60% in weight of nepheline syenite mixed with clay were elaborated. Afterwards, the specimens were exposed to three different temperatures, 900 °C, 1000 °C e 1100 °C and each one was submitted to physic and mechanic tests to determine the potential of Monchique’s Syenite in ceramic industry.
