Abstract
This paper analyse three historiographic perspectives concerning the Portuguese
participation in the First World War: the classical perspective, based on the external
dimension and with two strands (e.g. the defence of colonial possessions and the strategic differentiation from Spain); a 1990s historiographic perspective focused on the domestic political situation; and a recent approach, that interlocks the external and internal political dimensions.
