Abstract

This article delves into the Atlantic dynamics during the period of the aggregation of the Portuguese Crown to the Hispanic Monarchy based on economic relations and personal networks of the Portuguese community established in the Canary Islands with Spanish America. To carry out this study, we have analyzed primary insular documentation, mainly notarial, as well as the publications that have investigated the Hispanic horizon in the Atlantic, with the purpose of including our research into an integral and relational history. As a result, we present an account of the relations between the Canary Islands and America that goes beyond the traditional perception of a unidirectional mercantile course to present multifocal and transborder Atlantic ties built by not only Castilians.
