Abstract
Considered as a fundamental element in the training of artists, travelling and studying abroad was promoted by Portuguese cultural agencies through artistic scholarships. In this article, information on the official award of these scholarships is systematized for the first time. The chronology under scrutiny, between 1918 and 1939, includes important political transformations in Portugal – the end of the First Republic, the Military Dictatorship, the Estado Novo – which in turn had consequences in the organisation and action of the agencies successively responsible for the management of artistic promotion (Conselhos
de Arte e Arqueologia, Junta Nacional de Educação, Instituto para a Alta Cultura). Based on the analysis of the legislative framework and on the interpretation of official resolutions, this text aims at contributing to the study of Portuguese official institutions in the promotion of artistic training and specialization abroad.
