Abstract
Since 1926, the year in which the military coup that instituted the Dictatorship took place, there have been considerable changes in the Portuguese journalistic landscape, with two processes being high-lighted: media segmentation, which occurred when journalism found, successively, in radio and television, new platforms for the dissemination of messages; and digitalization, which results, literally, from the digital-ization of journalistic media, processes and products. This book, the second volume of a series, intends, like the first volume, to contribute to narrate the history of Portuguese journalism through a general, systematic and diachronic approach to the history of journalism in Portugal, in this case since 1926. Its edition is justi-fied because synthesis works, such as this one, introduce a subject, in its general aspects, to a community of readers. The narrative is guided by the emergence and disappearance of journalistic media and by referenc-es to the interpreters of the activity in each historical moment — the journalists. In its organization and ex-position, the work obeys the author’s personal interpretation of the historical evolution, since the succession of facts throughout history, some more remarkable and noted than others, having no a priori meaning, needs interpretations that make it intelligible and comprehensible. The author’s personal perspective on the history of Portuguese journalism is revealed not only in the way his vision of history is expressed in the narrative, but also in the proposed periodization of the history of journalism in Portugal, object of the second chapter of this book, which considers information presented both in this second volume and in the first volume of this work.
