Abstract

The guiding objective of the Fernão Lopes Portal is to disseminate Lopes’s chronicles among an international readership of students, scholars and anyone interested in Medieval European affairs in the 14th and early 15th centuries. The chronicles integrate Portugal as an important player in crucial moments of medieval History: Iberian dynastic wars, Hundred Years War, international diplomacy and alliances, political and economic crises, and many other aspects of medieval life, from public administration to food production, military strategy, medicinal practices, currencies in circulation, etc.
The Portal can be used as a set of interactive footnotes providing useful information to assist the reading of the chronicles in any edition, through consistent references to the respective chronicle and chapter. It was originally developed to facilitate the first full translation of Lopes’s work into English (The Chronicles of Fernão Lopes, Boydell/Tamesis, 2023), but later developed other missions, among them complementing the Secondary School History and Literature programs in Portugal.
The Portal was originally financed by the ‘National Endowment for the Humanities’, USA, and later by the ‘Instituto de Estudos Medievais’ (IEM) with the assistance of FCT.
