Abstract
The present study approaches the theme of civic-religious celebrations that took place in the city of Coimbra, in the beginning of the 16th century. It focuses, above all, on legislative production, both by the Crown and the county, aiming
at its organization and regulation. If we take into account their frequency, we can divide them into two groups: annual and occasional. Among the former, as happens in all the cities of the Kingdom, the feast of Corpus Christi stands out, the high point of which was, of course, the procession. In addition to this service, the municipality is concerned with legislating on the penitential processions held in Lent or with those of litanies. The Crown, headed by Manuel, invests mainly in the processions of the Visitation and the Anjo Custódio. Presenting a more or less accentuated religious dimension, the civic facet of these celebrations is, on the other hand, undeniable. We can see it reinforced at the feast of St. John: the city’s flag, carried by its tenente, plays a prominent role. It is also important to list the organization of the Bodo of St. Anthony. As for the latter, as would be expected, the attention is linked to the planning of the royal entrances.
