Abstract
The main goal of this paper is a comparative study between the cities of Ponta Delgada (Azores) and Funchal (Madeira) on the question of Tobacco, in the period corresponding to the end of the XVIII and beginning of the XIX century. Firstly, we will try to analyze the role of both cities in the scope of the Royal Tobacco Contract. Secondly, we will deepen the knowledge of the insular struggles unleashed against the blockades promoted by the General Tobacco Contractor. Finally, we will explain the increase and specificities of the Tobacco production, manipulation and export, after the abolition of the Royal contractor.
