Abstract
Poetic collage is mainly connected to the 20th century avant-garde, but its practice had a larger impact. Considering that, in the 20th century, the writing of poetic self-portraits was intensely explored, this study aims to reflect upon the contributions of collage to the poetic self-portrait. To this end, the poems
“Retrato do autor por Camilo Pessanha (colagem)”, by Carlos de Oliveira, and “Auto-retrato com versos de Camões”, by Pedro Mexia, will be read side by side, showing how the poets cite other poets in order to create a portrait of themselves as authors, which is never separate from their own conception of poetic work.
