Poder, família, representação: a heráldica na faiança de Santa Clara-A-Velha

As intervenções arqueológicas realizadas no Mosteiro de Santa Clara-a-Velha em Coimbra permitiram reunir um conjunto vasto de objectos representativos do quotidiano daquela comunidade de clarissas, tais como uma das mais significativas colecções de cerâmica do século XVII. A este nível sinaliza-se o lote de faiança portuguesa constituído por milhares de fragmentos e onde consta iconografia variada. Entre os temas representados, destaca-se um elevado número de recipientes com representações heráldicas. No presente texto, partindo da identificação dos diferentes brasões representados, apresenta-se uma reflexão centrada nas desigualdades socioecónomicas entre as habitantes do mosteiro e discute-se a importância simbólica destes objectos no seu quotidiano.


The excavations in the Santa Clara-a-Velha Monastery in Coimbra resulted in a vast assemblage of objects connected to the daily lives of the female community living under the rules of the St. Clare Order. A fundamental part of those objects corresponds to one of the most representative collections of 17th century ceramics in Portugal, where a vast group of tin glaze ware exists. Among those ceramics a high number of vessels with the representations of coats of arms. Based on those vessels we aim to discuss socio-economic bases for inequality
and distinctive behaviours.
