Abstract
The research presented focuses on an unpublished illuminated manuscript, a Ritual belonging to the late fifteenth century or to the start of the sixteenth century. The work was produced for the abbey of Sta. Maria de Alcobaça (St Mary of Alcobaça), but it ended up being integrated in the abbey library of Sta. Maria de Salzedas. It is a manuscript of great interest to Cistercian studies, since it relates closely to the use of different physical spaces in the Alcobaça abbey, through the rituals described, including the ritual of the profession of monks and a procession intended to celebrate the birthdays of the deceased. Besides this, the manuscript raises doubts about its scriptorium of origin, since it does not seem to be modelled on any of the earlier surviving illuminated manuscripts from Alcobaça.
