Abstract

Philippe de Commynes (before 1447–1511) is a key figure in the history of fifteenth‐century Western diplomacy. Successively at the service of the Duke of Burgundy and of three kings of France, he acquired exceptional experience in the field of diplomacy. His methods and skills were striking to contemporaries. Commynes was also the author of the remarkable Memoirs. In this monumental non‐scholarly work, he evokes princes and important personalities, highlights the importance of diplomatic episodes, and presents insightful reflections on diplomacy and its proper use.
