Abstract
This chapter starts from the question: did the establishment of the Liberal regime in Portugal set a new phase of humorous periodism in the country? To answer it one has to discern the impact of humoristic processes in the formation of public opinion in modern Portugal, taking as reference the publication of O Quinquilheiro in 1835, after the civil war that put an end to Absolutism and established the Constitutional Monarchy.
