Abstract
Through the Labyrinths of Portuguese Medical History in the 19th and 20th centuries was an exhibition based on the construction of another narrative about the history of Portuguese medicine, giving voice to a set of diverse historical objects that inhabit museums, libraries or private homes. These objects allow us to navigate a labyrinthine tangle of images, experiences, and memories, as well as knowledge and practices.
The labyrinths of this history of objects allows for reflection on the anxieties, uncertainties, fear, and dissonances that the practice of medicine often echoed in the wilderness, rural areas, cities, doctor's offices, wards, hospital benches, within oneself, between individuals, and within society... that we scrutinise through the threads woven by each of the interviewed figures, akin to Ariàdne's threads in the labyrinth of the Minotaur.
Without aspiring to cover all the paradigmatic moments in this historical narrative or neglecting any of the key figures in the evolution of medical knowledge or the institutions they established, we propose to follow five possible perspectives based on the selected objects, representative of two centuries of history:
1. Medical Care and Public Health
2. Medicine and Laboratory
3. Medicine and Territory
4. Medicine and Global Health
5. Portuguese Medicine in the World: the voices of some of its actors
