Abstract
One hundred years after Pombal's death, his centenary updated disputes about him, opposing mainly sectors of republicanism and Catholicism in Portugal. Looking up newspapers, letters, and books of that time, the author reflects on the clashes that happenedthen in the city of Oporto, in which Camilo Castelo Branco took part. A critic of Pombal and his apologists, right after the commemorations the novelist published his Perfil, the most famous work the centenary motivated. The article focuses on extreme poles of the disputes over the Pombaline past and on how Camilo –amidst this broader discussion about the role of the marquis in the country (between past, present, and future) –takes a position both on how this past was mobilized and on the nature and limitation of his own work of writing about this polemic past.
